Devotional Thought
The term "gospel" derives from the Old English godspell, a word-for-word translation of the Greek term euangelion, which means "good news" or "glad tidings." The gospel is the saving activity of God in Jesus Christ, from His birth to His death on the cross, to His resurrection, and ultimately His return, proclaimed through the whole of Scripture. Paul outlines it clearly in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4: Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures...
This good news of salvation in Christ changes everything for the believer. Jesus' death on the cross is the turning point in history, and, as we can read in John 15:13, the greatest sign of love ever expressed: Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for His friends . Through His blood, Jesus has saved us from our sin, both now and eternally.
He Himself is the gospel—the good news. Jesus changes everything.
