Devotional Thought
This well-known hymn reminds us of the value and beauty of God's word. Why is God's word to be valued? What makes His word so beautiful? A few of the reasons can be found within the verses of the hymn: God's word teaches us faith and duty; His word is for all, and is to all freely given; His word woos us to heaven; and His word offers pardon and peace to all.
In a broad sense, these wonderful words of life refer to the whole of God's written word found in Scripture - His teachings, His commands, His instruction. More specifically, and as we can see in verse 3, they refer to the wonderful, life-giving words of the gospel: "sweetly echoes the gospel call, wonderful words of life!" Scripture clearly tells us that Christ was born for us, that He died and resurrected for us, and that He'll return for us. This is the gospel, the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ, and these are the wonderful words of life that the hymn writer desired be sung to Him over and over again. May this also be our desire - to be reminded each day of all that is ours in Christ.
