1. Rise, my soul, gird thee with pow'r; watch! To prayer betake thee; lest the sudden evil hour unawares o'ertake thee. Satan's prey soon are they who make no endeavour, watch not, pray not ever.
2. Wake, arouse! And never shirk when the Lord would teach thee. Wake! And see His holy work shine in splendour round thee. God demands eyes and hands open for the offers He so richly proffers.
3. But first rouse thee and awake from thy sinful slumber, else will follow in its wake burdens which encumber. Take thou heed– utmost need! Death in sin might find thee ere thou look behind thee.
4. With thy watching mingle prayer; watching, praying, waiting. Shun all slothfulness of care; work then unabating. And at length His great strength helps in our endeavour to be His forever.
