Is He Worthy? By Andrew Peterson

Lyrics

Do you feel the world is broken? (We do)
Do you feel the shadows deepen? (We do)
But do you know that all the dark won’t stop the light from getting through? (We do)
Do you wish that you could see it all made new? (We do)

Is all creation groaning? (It is)
Is a new creation coming? (It is)
Is the glory of the Lord to be the light within our midst? (It is)
Is it good that we remind ourselves of this? (It is)

Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole?
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?
The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave He is David’s Root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave.
Is He worthy? Is He worthy?
Of all blessing and honor and glory?
Is He worthy of this? (He is!)

Does the Father truly love us? (He does)
Does the Spirit move among us? (He does)
And does Jesus our Messiah hold forever those He loves? (He does)
Does our God intend to dwell again with us? (He does)

(He is!)

Is He worthy? Is He worthy?
Is He worthy of this? (He is!)

Devotional Thought

Several important questions are posed in this hymn of worship and profession: Do you feel the world is broken?; Is a new creation coming?; Does the Father truly love us?; Does the Spirit move among us?; Does our God intend to dwell again with us?  Even though the hymn writer answers these questions for us, it would be worthwhile for us to take some time to contemplate them for ourselves, and to consider our own answers to these questions.

The most important question, however, and the one that demands our greatest attention and consideration, is the one that's reiterated throughout the song: Is He worthy? More specifically—is Jesus Christ worthy of all blessing, honor, and glory?

Revelations 5:11-13 provides us with the answer:

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive the power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!" And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: "Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!"

We can see here that the answer clearly is, "He is!" If anyone is worthy, it's Jesus Christ. All blessing, honor and glory belong to Him—and only to Him.

As we enter this holy season where we remember Christ's suffering and reflect on His love shown toward us on the cross, may we also spend significant time contemplating the worthiness of Christ. And may our heart's response to the question, "Is He worthy?" always be—"He is!"
