Episode 49 - Holy Communion
Holy Communion is the high point of the divine service experience. It is in Holy Communion that we come the closest to Christ and He gives us the power and strength to do what God wants us to do. Thus, in order to partake of Holy Communion, the soul has to be prepared – the believer has repented and has heard the absolution. In the past, Holy Communion was said to be a “receipt,” which is not correct.
Just as He did at the Last Supper with the Apostles, when we hear the consecration words, He offers to us to receive His presence. Holy Communion is the only sacrament that we receive repeatedly (Holy Baptism and Holy Sealing only happen once). Jesus is the one who stipulated that communion with Him should be an ongoing practice, when He said, “For as often as you do this." (cf. 1 Cor 11:26)
However, it is not about the amount of times we partake of Holy Communion, but about the impact that the sacrament has on us. God gave His only begotten Son for us, and He expects that communion has a deep effect in us; Holy Communion should be a very intimate and holy moment. In these two acts, we have an intimate relationship with Christ: the absolution, then Holy Communion.
Holy Communion is:
- The only sacrament that must be received repeatedly.
- The high point of the divine service.
- A meal of fellowship with our brothers and sisters.
- A continuous evolution to grow in Christ, and we continue to do it until He comes.
