Liturgy and Music: Acceptance Hymn(s)

Acceptance hymns comprise the hymns between assisting ministers, or, if there are no assisting ministers, directly following the sermon, before preparation for Holy Communion. These hymns should reflect the congregation’s acceptance of God’s word, provision, and presence. For this reason, this is an ideal time for congregational singing because it gives each congregant the opportunity to express their acceptance.

A piano solo (as a short, musical thought) can also be appropriate here, provided lyrics are either known or listed somewhere for reflection. It’s often impactful when these songs are connected with the sermon theme or Bible verse, but they can also just be general hymns of praise, thanksgiving, and worship.

NOTE: this song is optional depending on the guidance of officiant. Here and there, a minister may prefer to go directly from the sermon into preparation for Holy Communion. This is an example where communication between minister and music leader can be very important.
