The Significance of Song Selection

Whether for the divine service experience, moments of family devotion, or momentous occasions in the life of the church, the music that we select matters. Each time we select songs, we have the important responsibility of determining the truths that will be impressed upon hearts and professed through singing. This is a calling that requires much prayer and discernment, as well as humble submission to the leading of the Spirit.

Liturgy and Music

The connection between liturgy and music is what makes the song selection process such a meaningful part of preparing for divine service. As you prayerfully choose songs, it can be helpful to remember that music does more than support a theme—it helps shape and enrich each liturgical moment. In the past, songs were often selected primarily based on the divine service guide, and this can certainly still be appropriate and impactful. At the same time, not every song must directly connect to the theme and verse. The priority is that the music fits naturally within the liturgy, supporting the significance of each moment.
