I Believe in Christ, by John Longhurst, arr. Mack Wilberg

Lyrics

I believe in Christ; He is my King!
With all my heart to Him I'll sing;
I'll raise my voice in praise and joy,
In grand amens my tongue employ.

I believe in Christ; He is God's Son.
On earth to dwell His soul did come.
He healed the sick; the dead He raised.
Good works were His; His name be praised.

I believe in Christ my Lord, my God!
My feet He plants on gospel sod.
I'll worship Him with all my might;
He is the source of truth and light.

I believe in Christ; He ransoms me.
From Satan's grasp He sets me free,
And I shall live with joy and love
In His eternal courts above.

I believe in Christ; He stands supreme!
From Him I'll gain my fondest dream;
And while I strive through grief and pain,
His voice is heard: "Ye shall obtain."

I believe in Christ; so come what may;
With Him I'll stand in that great day
When on this earth He comes again
To rule among the sons of men.

Devotional Thought

What a powerful profession of faith is reiterated throughout this great hymn—"I believe in Christ!" If there's anything that we ought to profess again and again as Christians (in our hearts, in our lives, and with our voices), it's our belief in Jesus Christ. This fundamental belief is expressed very clearly in the Second Article of Faith of our New Apostolic Creed:

"I believe in Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried, entered the realm of the dead, rose again from the dead on the third day, and ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty, from where He will return."

Our belief in Christ goes much deeper than just believing that He existed. We believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He stands supreme as the King of Kings, seated at the right hand of God, the Father. We believe that He came to earth, was crucified for our sins, and rose from the dead so that we might some day also have the opportunity to be raised to life. We believe that He is the source of all truth and light, and that He sets us free from the grasp of Satan. And we believe that, just as He ascended into Heaven, He will return to take us unto Himself, that where He is, we might also be.

May "I believe in Christ!" be our most prominent and consistent profession during this season of Eastertide and beyond.
