“For there is no partiality with God.”
Romans 2:11
God’s election and calling are not based on human criteria. They cannot be explained by our merits or abilities. We cannot grasp them except through faith. God elected Israel even though they were in no way superior to other peoples (Deuteronomy 7: 6–8). Cornelius received the gift of the Holy Sealing even though he was not a Jew. God called Moses to His service despite the crime he had committed (Exodus 2: 11) and despite his weaknesses (cf. Exodus 3–4). The same applies to Saul, the later Apostle Paul.
God does not judge human beings based on their appearance alone. He also considers their sins, their guilt, their works, and their attitude of heart (Matthew 5: 24; 7: 23).
The divine law applies to all human beings without exception. Jesus taught it in all truth, without regard for anyone’s appearance (Mark 12: 14). In order to please God, human beings of all nations must fear Him and work righteousness (Acts 10: 35). All must obey Hm, believe in Jesus Christ, seek eternal life, and persevere in doing good works. (cf. verse 7).
God can save us no matter what our circumstances of life may be. He can save the poor and the rich, the sick and the healthy, both slaves and their masters (Ephesians 6: 7–9), both the living and the dead. It is not our past that is determinative here, but rather our current relationship to Jesus Christ (cf. Zacchaeus and the thief on the cross).
We cannot rely on our skills alone to serve God. We must ensure that God is with us, just as He was with Moses (Exodus 3: 12). God is with those who do His will. Let us serve the Lord without showing favoritism and without requiring anything in exchange. (Deuteronomy 16: 18–19, 2 Chronicles 19: 6–7).
Last but not least, let us note that our calling in no way exempts us from respecting the law of God (Romans 2: 21-22).
